Your total income
Think of your wage as the amount of food you can eat to stay the same weight! Just like everyone gets paid different amounts, everyone has a different amount of food they can consume. This relates to gender, weight, activity levels, amount of muscle. Think of losing weight as saving money! If you "spend all of your salary" every month, you will stay the same weight. The more you save the more weight you will lose!
Knowing how much you personally have to spend is a complicated formula that only Oxford Mathematics graduates can work out (and me!) but click this link to find out your total
Tip Number 1: Get an activity tracker such as a FitBit or Apple Watch to find out the exact number of calories you are burning each day!
So what should you spend your money on?
You can skip paying your rent or council tax, but if you do there are severe consequences! Skip the essentials in your diet and you will get ill, feel lethargic, struggle to lose weight, even get injured!
Once you have covered the essentials , what you spend the rest of your salary on is UP TO YOU!
Now I want you to forget all the bullshit you hear in the media about sugar, and fat, and bread and everything else! I was chatting to my hair dresser the other day and she showed me a plan her "nutrition" friend was promoting! It had RIDICULOUS things in like don't eat bananas and blueberries because they have sugar! I hope you can see how stupid that is!
Bread gets vilified all the time, and it's one of the first things to go when people diet! Now unless you are Celiac or have some form of Gluten Insensitivity (and less than 1% of people do) you can eat bread, and everything else you want - as long as you have the 'money' to do so!
The simple fact is, as stated above, to lose weight you need to SAVE SOME MONEY. The more you save the more weight you will lose!
Common mistake number 1: Spending your money on things that cost too much
Now what you spend your money on is up to you! What you eat is up to you! Just be aware that, just like expensive luxuries that take all of our income up, certain foods have too many calories in and use up all of our allowance! These foods tend to be the really nice tasting ones! These foods are high in fat, sugar or both! (Essentially they are just high in calories!) You just have to budget, like you do with your money! If you want something that badly, make sure you can afford it and make allowances for it!
Spend over your income and you go in to debt! Out comes the credit card and the debt builds! Eat too much and you get fat! And just like a credit card it takes time to pay back! The only way to do this, is to start spending less, under what we earn and pay back that amount! Again, nothing ground breaking here. The more you save, the move you can pay back! But if you aren't saving some calories you will see zero change! (I could go on to talk about getting in to too much debt but that;s for another time!)
We all love a good party! Meet up with friends, let the hair down and go out eating and drinking loads! The only problem is this contributes to the spending too much problem! Picture this, you spend all week carefully budgeting, saving money and then BAM the weekend hits, and bang goes your savings for that week!
I love this example as it's true for the money analogy, but also blowing all our money on alcohol and takeways directly adds to the calories we consume too!
If you want to save money, there are many ways to do that: Price comparison websites, cheap supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl, swapping energy suppliers. They are many ways to save some calories with food as well! Look at the picture below....
The "healthy natural bar" has more calories, fat and sugar than the flake! Eat the flake, save more money!
The point of this comparison is not that sugar is bad, nor fat! And don't think I am saying that flakes are good for you, and you should eat them all the time! My point is it saves your more calories than the touted healthy option!
There are many ways to save calories in your day, such as switching to 'diet' alternatives <----- Don't worry about the chemicals and aspartame unless you are consuming about 30 litres a day! Skipping breakfast is another method, this saves you loads of calories! If you aren't hungry in the morning, or don't have time don't worry! Eat when you want! Just remember the golden rule: Save some of your calories! Daily, weekly, monthly! Then you will lose weight
Tip number 3: Earn as much as you can! (WARNING No offence is meant in the example below!)
We all want to earn more money! Now while it may be difficult to get your employer to pay you more (and no I can't write a letter on your behalf!) you earn more money working than not working! IF you sit at home all day, claiming benefits and doing nothing (Ouch sorry, like I said no offence intended) you won't earn much.* Same as if you do not move all day, you have less calories to spend! Aim for as many steps as you can per day, with as many workouts as you can of whatever you like, and you will "increase your income"
*Some people do earn far too much in benefits, but as this is not meant to be a rant I will leave it there!
Tip number 4: Don't waste your money on scams!
Just as I write this I have received an email from a lawyer in Nigeria, as my great uncle twice removed's ex wife's third child's cousin's dad has just died and I am the closest relative to the £4.2million he has left in his will! All they need are my bank details! Yeah ok mate, I've had my coffee today I'm not falling for that! But there are loads of nutrition scams that will just take your real money off you and leave you skint and with zero results! Things like that XLS medical, which is downright dangerous or juice plus which is no better than a standard multivitamin just many times more expensive. I only add this, as they, and other products, just offer false hope and a lighter wallet! Please be careful!
- Save some money every month
- Increase your earnings by moving and exercising
- Don't blow all your money on those 'expensive' items
- Cover your essential spend
- Don't live in sin with the flexible friend
- Budget for the big spends
- Go cheap where you can!
